Simple tips and tricks to prevent spam overload in your project

Updated this week

What is spam in Brand24?

We track every mention of your keyword from across the web, regardless of where it comes from, its influence, or the author. However, that can sometimes result in mentions that aren’t always relevant to you.

Examples of popular spam

Spam can pop up in different scenarios. Here are some examples:

  • If you’re tracking a brand with a generic name like "Apple," you might collect mentions unrelated to the actual Apple brand.

  • If your brand is large, you might get many mentions that aren’t useful to your team.

  • If your brand name is shared with something in a different field or country, you could end up with unrelated mentions.

Tricks to prevent spam

Here is a list of all the solutions that may help you with preventing spam. Depending on your project and plan, try combining few of those:

01 Excluded and required words

02 Boolean Search

Boolean search lets you refine your results by using keywords with operators like AND, OR, and NOT. This way, you can include or exclude specific terms to find exactly what you’re after. If you’ve set up a more advanced Boolean search, you can save it as a filter to use again whenever you need it.

03 AI Topic Analysis

Topic analysis helps you identify and separate different topics in online mentions, allowing you to quickly analyze large volumes of articles, social posts, or comments.

You can use it in two ways to prevent spam. They work together, so there's no need to choose—use both!

Solution I

Check for any topics that are not related to your keyword. Next - Delete the topic. Simple.

Solution II

Review the word cloud in any of the unwanted topics. If you spot specific keywords tied only to that topic, add them to your excluded words list!

04 Muting authors/domains

If there are specific authors or domains you don’t want to see mentions from, and you're getting irrelevant results from those sources, the easiest solution is to mute them.

05 Intent filter

Filters out mentions based on the selected intent, such as spam, to keep your data clean and relevant.

06 Geolocation filter

This is handy if you're getting flooded with irrelevant mentions from a specific country (maybe there's a brand with the same name). Just use the Geolocation filter, click ‘Exclude countries,’ and voilà!

07 Language filter

Just like with the Geolocation filter, if you're getting irrelevant mentions in a specific language, simply exclude it!

08 Influence Score

Last but not least, use the Influence Score to filter out the least relevant mentions—those that don’t get much attention. If your keyword is popular and you don’t have time to go through all the mentions, this is the way to go!
